The Caravan Club of Great Britain was founded in 1907; not long after, Tony and Gerry Horton occupied Pathfinder Village, which began in 1932 hiring out caravans for self-towing. This soon turned into a holiday village that paused during the war years but the post-war national shortage of houses offered the prospect for residential caravaning and the business rapidly expanded adding facilities.
By 1954, it was evident that ‘residential caravaning’ was a permanent trend and heating, electricity and water were installed in subsequent years. Additional facilities were also added such as the Village Hall and in 1958 the first true mobile home was produced. The business thrived with manufacturing, repairs, residential and touring facilities.
In 1988, the site was sold to one of Britain’s premier park home developers, Avondale, which has now been established as a reputable management company for over 27 years. The name of Pathfinder continues as a manufacturer of stunning park homes in nearby Newton Abbot.
Today, Pathfinder Village is set amongst 46 acres of beautiful established Devonian woodland, which is home to a community of residents over 55. There are a real mix of “locals” and people who have moved to Devon as a lifestyle choice to enjoy the countryside, friendliness, coast and moors.
Close to the vibrant and expanding city of Exeter and to the A30, Pathfinder Village is in an enviable location with Dartmoor and the North and South Devon coast on its doorstep. The village hosts a variety of lifestyle homes; from quiet wooded corners, tucked away with homes often nestled in generous plots, through to modern homes sited for easy-access and that are maintenance-free.
Although Pathfinder Village houses hundreds of homes, it does not feel that way at all. The roads to take you around the village twist and turn meaning that there are fewer cars and those that are there, drive with a slow relaxed feel that matches the park.
We enjoyed exploring the different areas of Pathfinder village. Some homes overlook the neighbouring golf course; others have a lodge feel, surrounded by woodland as well as stunning new modern homes.
Although Pathfinder Village is only 8 miles away from Exeter, it is unnecessary to venture outside for shopping, as the site is self-contained with its own post office, church, shop, hairdressers and doctor’s surgery. The site also boasts a lively social life with clubs and groups on-site.
The Village has its own fully licensed Residents’ Club. Activities include bingo, dancing, pool, darts, skittles, painting, keep-fit and regular social evenings. The Club’s many activities include social meetings, talks, slide and film shows, cookery demonstrations, entertainment, parties, celebrations and outgoings. There is something for everyone.
The social lives of residents who reside in these park homes are known to thrive off the company of like-minded friends, who are bound by the safe, secure and supportive environments.
New recently, Long Woods is a development of fifteen luxury 1, 2 and 3 bedroom bungalow style park homes.
With many people saying that Pathfinder Village is a “great place to live”, residents are excited to be part of a friendly and flourishing community.
